Water can kind of get the job done when it comes to cleaning the windshield, but it just isn't nearly as good as windshield wiper fluid. This is not the only downfall to using water.
Water freezes. During the winter, you might try to clean your windshield but find that no water is squirting out even though its full. This is because the water froze. It will remain frozen until its hot again. If you use windshield wiper fluid, you won't have this problem because it is designed to freeze at super low temperatures only.
